“You just don’t”

When I was on the path of healing from anxiety/depression I went to see a mentor at my church at the time.  I didn’t know this when I went to speak with him but he had dealt with anxiety when he was a younger man.  While I was recovering, a “fear” that would creep up on me was what if anxiety and depression return to me? I mean, they showed up unexpectedly one day and invaded my life out of nowhere and although I was happy to be healing … what if???? What if it came back with a vengeance one day?

I listened to this sweet man tell his story and I asked him, “How did it not come back?  How did you not return to it?” To which he simply replied, “You just don’t.”

He was so secure.  This mentor is in his 50’s.  He had dealt with fear, panic, and anxiety when he was just out of his teens.  All those years and “it” never came back to him. I think his response of “you just don’t” opened up a window of understanding for me.

Once you know the truth you don’t allow it to return to you.  Fear is always knocking at the door, you just don’t answer it.  It’s not allowed in your home anymore.  It has no place in your head, heart, or on your lips.  It is an uninvited guest.

Simple enough.  You just don’t.
